How do you get started? The first thing you should do is attend a class offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This class will instruct you about the buying process and the related expenses of home ownership. The second step is to investigate the programs. There are private programs like the Nehemiah Program which offers grants for the down payment to qualified individuals. Federal, state and city programs which offer grants, low interest loans and in some cases second trust deeds with no interest or payments for 30 years.
