| What is Phishing? | What is Nigeria 419? | What is a Trojan Horse? |
What is "Phishing"? Have you ever received an e-mail from e-bay or PayPal or other legitimate organization asking you to update your information? Did the page look legitimate and ask you to just click on a link to "update" your information? Beware, that link may really be collecting your information and may not be (probably isn't) from the real organization. That is "phishing".
What is Nigeria 419? This is the generic name given to any of many scams designed to part you from your money. In the scam, you receive an e-mail or fax claiming to be a "prince" or "government official" or "businessman" or their widow or son, and they need your help to get millions of dollars out of Nigeria. One variation has a bank official who can not find any heirs for a dead account holder and wants you to pose as one. You of course will receive a nice cut for your trouble. Ok, first lets "assume" this is legitimate. What they are asking you to do is a crime. At best you are helping them to launder money and at worst your are committing a fraud. What really happens? Well, in one variation, you will have to give them good faith money. After all, they are going to wire millions to your bank account, so you need to give them $30,000 to ensure you will not run off with their $20,000,000. Does that really make sense to you? In another variation you must pay the cost of bribing certain officials (another crime) to get the money out. The final variation, instead of wiring money into your account, they empty yours and wire the money to theirs. Be very wary if any one ask you to get cash from your bank and then have your bank wire the cash to them. That money is gone forever.
What is a Trojan Horse? A Trojan horse is a program secretly placed on your computer disguised as something else, perhaps that game you wanted, or the weather program that puts your local weather on your computer. These innocent programs may actually be hiding another program that is gathering information about you. It may just be what type of websites you visit so they can target SPAM to you that you may be interested in (right like that could ever happen, I am never interested in SPAM). It could also be capturing your credit card information and passwords. Protect yourself by having an up to date firewall and virus program. Be careful when installing programs for free from the internet.
We at Pasley Realty hope you are never the victim of a crime, but if you are the victim of an internet crime, or solicitation, we hope the above information will be useful in reporting it.
